THE FIRST SALT MUSEUM OPENED

The country’s first “Salt Museum” has opened its doors in Salina.

A place dedicated to celebrating the tradition and culture linked to the production and harvesting of salt in the Maltese Islands.

Malta celebrates the inauguration of its first “Salt Museum” at the Salina nature reserve.

For the construction of the Salt Museum, 100,000 euros of funds from the Gal Majjistral Foundation were invested, as part of the “LEADER” program.

The Salt Museum is located in an area rich in history, culture and environmental biodiversity.

The complex also includes wooden huts rebuilt in the 18th century by the English in the same style as the original structures.

Currently, one of these huts has been transformed into a center to welcome visitors, while yet another houses the new museum.

The Salina nature reserve has been redeveloped thanks to a 7 million euro project, co-financed by the European Union through the agricultural fund for rural development 2007–2013.

The protected site, managed by BirdLife Malta, is also part of the Natura 2000 network and is also a Special Area of Conservation for its endemic flora and fauna.

Present at the ribbon cutting on Friday evening were the Minister of Environment and Energy, Miriam Dalli, and the CEO of BirdLife Malta, Mark Sultana.

For the occasion, Minister Dalli highlighted the importance of the museum in preserving the history of salt production in the country, but also the culture and beauty of the Maltese landscape, further declaring that «By protecting our heritage, we help people to appreciate nature.”

“This is the kind of tradition we should be proud of,” Sultana said.
