MALTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT EXPANSION
Malta International Airport to add a new 6,000-square-metre terminal by 2028.
The project aims to improve passenger flows and services in light of growing air traffic.
By 2028, Malta International Airport will feature an additional 6,000-square-metre terminal.
The eastward expansion project was announced during a press conference held on site.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Robert Abela framed the intervention within the broader transformation process that has affected the airport in recent years, highlighting the role of private investment supported by the government.
Following the opening of the Priority Guest Terminal last summer, the new project represents a further phase in the airport’s infrastructural development.
Abela described it as “a key infrastructure for national progress,” not only for passenger traffic but also for tourism, trade, and international relations.
“The airport is often the first and last point of contact with Malta for those arriving or departing,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of service quality.
According to the Prime Minister, the East Expansion project is not only aimed at increasing operational space but also at improving the airport’s overall efficiency and preparing it for future needs.
This approach aligns with Malta Vision 2050, the national strategic plan that will be officially presented in the coming weeks following a phase of public consultation.
The document identifies aviation and tourism as two pillars of economic development, alongside the need for targeted investment in strategic infrastructure, strengthened international connectivity, and greater attention to environmental sustainability.
The eastward expansion, it was explained, aims to consolidate Malta’s role as a regional hub in the Mediterranean.
Closing the conference, in the presence of Malta International Airport CEO Alan Borg, Abela confirmed the Government’s intention to continue supporting projects capable of strengthening connectivity, attracting new investment, and fostering the creation of quality jobs.
