It will join thirty countries and organizations already active in promoting and exploiting the potential of offshore wind.
Malta has officially joined the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA), a global alliance dedicated to the promotion and development of offshore wind energy, made up of around 30 countries and organisations.
The confirmation came during an event held as part of the 15th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
«Malta’s decision to join GOWA reflects its commitment to contributing to shared initiatives in the offshore wind energy sector» states the Ministry, underlining that the milestone represents «a milestone, fruit of the Government’s important initiatives in promoting the offshore renewable energy sector».
«By engaging with international partners – he continues – Malta aims to accelerate the implementation of offshore renewable energy, a crucial element in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions».
Established during COP27 by IRENA, the Danish government and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), GOWA aims to promote the global adoption of offshore wind energy also through the mobilization of technologies, systems and public and private investments capable of exploiting the enormous potential of wind power.
Among the main initiatives undertaken by Malta in this sector, the Ministry highlights the publication of the “Preliminary Qualification Questionnaire”, which is the first of three phases useful for selecting an operator for Malta’s first offshore wind farm.
Furthermore, the publication of the National Policy for the Implementation of Renewable Energy has identified six designated areas within Malta’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). These areas have undergone a strategic environmental assessment to ensure sustainable development.
