BLUE FLAG AWARDED TO 13 MALTESE BEACHES

Blue flag awared to 13 maltese beaches.

Thirteen Maltese beaches have earned the prestigious Blue Flag status for 2025.

A total of thirteen beaches across Malta and Gozo have been awarded the internationally recognized Blue Flag, a certification that confirms high standards in four key areas: water quality, environmental management, services offered, and safety.

The beaches awarded the Blue Flag for 2025 are:

Mellieha Bay (Mellieha)

Golden Bay (Mellieha)

Paradise Bay Resort Hotel beach (private beach, Mellieha)

Ghajn Tuffieha (Mgarr)

Hondoq Bay (Qala, Gozo)

Fond Ghadir (Sliema)

Fajtata Bay (Sliema)

St. George’s Bay (St. Julian’s)

The Westin Dragonara Resort beach (private beach, St. Julian’s)

Bugibba Perched Beach (St. Paul’s Bay)

Qawra Point (St. Paul’s Bay)

Ramla Bay (Xaghra, Gozo)

Marsalforn (Zebbug, Gozo)

Additionally, Xwejni Bay, located in Zebbug, Gozo, has once again received the “Beach of Quality” award for this year, a recognition that could pave the way for future Blue Flag eligibility.

The announcement was made at Golden Bay by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and Tourism Affairs Ian Borg, alongside Vincent Attard, President of Nature Trust – FEE Malta, and Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA).

The event also featured the symbolic release of “Evie”, a sea turtle that was rescued and rehabilitated for nearly a year at the Nature Trust rehabilitation centre after being found injured by a fishing hook.

Present at the ceremony was the family who had spotted the turtle in distress at sea last August.

The Blue Flag designation follows the criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and is implemented locally by Nature Trust – FEE Malta. Each beach must meet over 30 requirements, ranging from water quality to safety, environmental education, and accessibility.

With the exception of the two private hotel beaches, all Blue Flag coastal sites in Malta and Gozo are managed by the MTA and the Ministry for Gozo, respectively.

“These awards show how different stakeholders – public and private – can effectively collaborate to offer high-quality tourism experiences without compromising environmental protection,” said Deputy Prime Minister Borg.

“The Blue Flag is not just a symbol, but a tangible testimony to our commitment to safeguarding our coastal natural heritage.”
